Charles University

It is a well-known fact that Charles University, or "Karlovka", is the oldest university to the North of the Alps and to the East of Paris. It is not so well-known that with its more than 50 thousand students it ranks among the largest universities in Europe. In a variety of rankings Charles University stands out as one of by far the best universities in the whole Central and Eastern Europe.

Throughout its history, a wide range of leading world scientists was placed at Charles University, for instance Albert Einstein, Bernard Bolzano or a Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský. Besides countless natural scientists, Charles University delivered one of the leading political scientists of the 20th century, Karl W. Deutsch, who prior to his emigration to the USA obtained in 1938 a doctoral degree at Charles University. In the 50s and 60s Deutsch became one of the founders of modern political science and international relations.

Besides its academic pursuits, Charles University has always been a breeding place of Czech intelligentsia and social, cultural and political elites, including several presidents and prime ministers.

After 1989, University gradually reverts to where it historically belonged, i.e. the top of European university education and scientific research, among internationally recognized educational institutions attracting the students as well as academic staff from all over the world. University is a natural intellectual centre of the Czech Republic and as such attracts prominent guests; for example, in 2014 it was visited by in total 6 European heads of the state (the German Federal President Gauck two times) and the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.
